If you’d like to call them to figure out your problem instead of emailing or writing a letter, then you have several numbers to choose from. The specific one you need depends on the type of inquiry you have.
Live Telephone Assistance
If you need tax advice, help with your tax return, or just general IRS assistance, there are a few numbers you can call. Which one depends on what your situation is and certain other factors.
If you’re calling as an individual, the number is 1-800-829-1040. The hours for this number are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM until 10:00 PM your local time. This number is for most inquiries, although there are a few exceptions.
For those taxpayers who believe they have been victim of identity theft, the phone number is 1-800-908-4490. The hours for this number are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM your local time.
The IRS has also set up a number for taxpayers who have hearing impairments. They should call 1-800-829-4059. The hours for this number are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM until 10:00 PM.
Businesses
The IRS has also set up a few phone numbers to call for businesses. The general phone number is 1-800-829-4933. The hours for this number are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM until 10:00 your local time.
However, there is a separate phone number. There are three types of businesses that should use it.

- Retirement Plan Administrators
- Government Entities
If your business falls into one of these categories, call 1-877-829-5500. The hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM until 7:00 Central Time.
