NC State Tax Extension

The individual income tax returns for residents of The Tar Heel State North Carolina are due by April 15.

However, if you cannot assemble your return by that due date, you can request a tax extension from the North Carolina Department of Revenue. It is recommended that you apply for an extension if you cannot meet the April 15th deadline — even if you expect a tax refund.

To receive an automatic 6-month extension for filing your state income tax return (Form D-400), use North Carolina Tax Form D-410 (Application for Extension for Filing Individual Income Tax Return).

Make sure to submit Form D-410 by the original due date of your return (April 15th), along with payment any state income tax that you owe. You must pay at least 90% of your North Carolina income tax liability to avoid incurring penalties and interest charges.

Note that even if you do not expect to owe any additional state income tax, you are still required to file Form D-410 if you want to get a tax extension.

Mail Form D-410 (with or without payment) to the following address:
N.C. Department of Revenue, PO Box 25000, Raleigh, North Carolina 27640-0635
