It allows taxpayers to fill-in their tax forms online and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.com\/articles\/the-benefits-of-filing-your-taxes-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">file electronically<\/a> without having to buy\/use expensive tax preparation software. Free File Fillable Forms are essentially online versions of the paper tax forms. The features of Free File Fillable Forms are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No income limitations (everyone is eligible to use these forms)<\/li>\n<li>Supplies you with blank IRS tax forms (you can choose, self-prepare, and e-file your tax return)<\/li>\n<li>Provides basic mathematical calculations<\/li>\n<li>Gives you instant access to the most commonly filed Federal tax forms and schedules<\/li>\n<li>Does not provide state tax forms or state e-filing (visit your state\u2019s department of taxation website)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>IRS Free File<\/h3>\n<p>The IRS offers an online tax filing service called \u201cFree File,\u201d which helps guide eligible taxpayers through the e-filing process with step-by-step instructions and customer support. The IRS says that \u201cFree File is the fast, easy, and free way to prepare and e-file your federal taxes online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The features of IRS Free File are as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Poses easy-to-understand questions and displays your answers on the proper tax forms<\/li>\n<li>Computes the math calculations for you<\/li>\n<li>Verifies your information for accuracy<\/li>\n<li>Provides you with instant access to the most commonly filed Federal tax forms and schedules<\/li>\n<li>Some software companies offer state tax preparation (however, extra fees may apply)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, eligible taxpayers who filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.com\/articles\/what-you-need-know-about-tax-extensions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tax extension<\/a> this year, can still use Free File to prepare and submit their Federal tax return through October 15, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The Free File service is provided by IRS-approved tax software companies through a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance. In fact, the IRS makes it convenient for taxpayers (who are anxious to save time and money) by having a Free File link on the <a href=\"http:\/\/irs.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">IRS homepage<\/a>. The IRS website can also give you a list of approved e-file providers for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.com\/articles\/tax-preparation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tax preparation<\/a> needs.<\/p>\n<p>If you are not able to find a Free File company that you think you will qualify for, you may want to use the IRS\u2019s &#8220;Guide Me To A Company&#8221; interactive tool.\u00a0 If you have trouble choosing an IRS-approved company after scanning the listing of available firms that will e-file taxes online for free, you can use the \u201cGuide Me To A Company&#8221; tool to narrow down your search results and find a provider that suits your needs. Note that individual company offers may be limited to specific states and include other criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure to carefully review the Free File offer criteria before you select a company to electronically file your taxes.\u00a0 Each participating software company has its own set of eligibility requirements, so you don\u2019t want to assume that you qualify to e-file for free.
