Vermont State Taxes

The Vermont Department of Taxes is responsible for administering and collecting state taxes, as well as assisting taxpayers and overseeing local property tax assessment practices.

Individual income tax in Vermont is imposed at the following rates/brackets:

• 3.55% on taxable income of $33,950 or less
• 7% on taxable income between $33,951 and $82,250
• 8.25% on taxable income between $82,251 and $171,550
• 8.9% on taxable income between $171,551 and $372,950
• 9.4% on taxable income of $372,951 or more

The sales/use tax has a rate of 6%.

The corporate income tax is imposed at the following rates (with a minimum tax of $250):

• 6% on taxable income of $10,000 or less
• 7% on taxable income between $10,001 and $25,000
• 8.5% on taxable income of $25,001 or more

Property taxes are enforced on the municipal level by local governments. Real property (i.e. real estate) is classified as ‘homestead’ or ‘non-residential’ for tax purposes. Property values are appraised by local assessing officials and tax rates are set by municipalities.
