Rhode Island State Tax ? Personal Income Tax

In general, every Rhode Island resident individual who files a federal income tax return must also file a Rhode Island income tax return.

Individual income tax in Rhode Island is imposed at the following rates/brackets:

  • 3.75% on taxable income of $33,950 or less
  • 7% on taxable income between $33,951 and $82,250
  • 7.75% on taxable income between $82,251 and $171,550
  • 9% on taxable income between $171,551 and $372,950
  • 9.9% on taxable income of $372,951 or more

RI state tax returns are due by April 15th following the end of the tax year. If you cannot file by the deadline, you may request an extension of time to file ? although you must still pay any tax due to the Rhode Island Division of Taxation.

Rhode Island State Tax ? Corporate Tax

There are 2 main types of corporate tax in Rhode Island: corporate income tax and corporate franchise tax. The ‘corporate income tax’ has a flat rate of 9% on a corporation’s net income. The ‘corporate franchise tax’ is imposed on authorized capital stock at a rate of $2.50 for each $10,000. Corporations must pay whichever rate (corporate income or corporate franchise) results in a higher tax, with a minimum tax of $500.

Rhode Island State Tax ? Sales & Use Tax

Sales tax is imposed on the retail sale, lease, or rental of goods and services. It is paid by consumers and collected by vendors registered with the Division of Taxation. Rhode Island’s sales tax rate is 7%.

The ‘use tax’ is a component of that sales tax is enforced when the proper amount of sales tax has not been paid. It generally applies to purchases made out-of-state and then brought into Rhode Island for storage, use, or consumption. Transactions made via Internet, telephone, and mail-order catalog are usually subject to the use tax.
