IRS Questions
Published:
Contact the IRS if you have tax questions such as how to respond to an IRS notice or how to resolve tax problems or how to eliminate tax debt or to look up your tax refund status.
Individuals may call the IRS at (800) 829-1040. IRS customer service representatives can answer questions about individual tax return preparation, including situations where a taxpayer has received notice of a tax problem.
If you would like to talk to an IRS representative in person, then you should visit a local office or IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. Refer to your local directory to locate the office in your area.
In case your tax problem has gone unresolved, contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service. The job of the Taxpayer Advocate Service is to assist taxpayers as they wade through the complex tax system. This is a free service that helps to ensure that taxpayers have a voice at the IRS and helps to guarantee fairness.
Finally, if you are in doubt about any tax situation it is best to ask the IRS for assistance. Not filing a return or ignoring a notice will only delay the resolution of your situation. Many people find that it is much easier to comply with the requests of the IRS than it is to avoid the IRS.
How to Contact the IRS
If you need to get in contact with someone at the IRS, you have several options available to you. You can write them a letter, call them on the phone, or even send them an email. The exact mode of correspondence may depend on exactly what you’re contacting them about.
General Inquiries
Individual taxpayers who need to contact the IRS for general questions have a few options:
- Tax Assistance: 1-800-829-1040
- Tax Assistance for the Hearing Impaired: 1-800-829-4059
- Email: [email protected]
Please note that the hearing impaired phone number can only be used by those with a TDD machine. When using the email address, keep in mind the IRS will not answer questions through that address. You must call the phone numbers above for personal tax questions. Do not include personal information in any emails.
Business taxpayers who want to call the IRS with questions should call the following number:
- Business Tax Assistance: 1-800-829-4933
Make sure you have all your information handy before you call. This way you don’t hold the phone operator up while you search your house for that one tax form you forgot.
Refund Assistance
Are you calling about your tax refund? Call the following number:
- Tax Refund Assistance: 1-800-829-4477
This is the dedicated number to check on your tax refund status. Again make sure you have all the information you need before you call. When you call they’ll walk you through the steps to find where your refund is and any steps you need to take to get it in your hand sooner.
