How to file tax extensions in New York

The 2012 income tax returns for residents of The Big Apple are due by April 15 (for calendar year taxpayers).

However, you must also pay state tax liability due by this deadline to avoid incurring penalties or interest charges.

If you cannot file your state tax return on time, you may request an automatic 6-month extension of time to file — however, there is no extension of time to pay.

You can apply for a state tax extension online or by using New York Tax Form IT-370 (Application for Automatic Six-Month Extension of Time to File for Individual).

Mail Form IT-370 with payment to:
Extension Request, PO Box 4125, Binghamton, New York 13902-4125

Mail Form IT-370 without payment to:
Extension Request–NR, PO Box 4126, Binghamton, New York 13902-4126
