Signing Your Electronic Tax Return

All electronically filed tax returns must now be signed using a Personal Identification Number (PIN). A PIN is any five digits you choose (except all zeros) to use as your electronic signature. Benefits of e-file with an Electronic Signature:

There are two methods of signing individual income tax returns with an electronic signature available for taxpayers. Both the Self-Select PIN Method and the Practitioner PIN Method allow taxpayers to use a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to sign the return.

Electronic Filing PIN Request

To e-file your 2010 tax return or other electronic forms, you must electronically sign them with your Self-Select PIN or Adjusted Gross Income from your 2009 tax return. If you can’t provide the necessary information from your 2009 tax return, you can request an Electronic Filing PIN’it’s as easy as 1-2-3!

1: Determine your eligibility… 2: Gather your information… 3: Go get your electronic filing PIN!
  • You filed a 2009 Form 1040, Form 1040-A, Form 1040-EZ or Form 1040-SS (PR); and
  • Your return was processed by December 11, 2010.
  • Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number;
  • First and Last Name;
  • Date of Birth;
  • Filing Status; and
  • Complete mailing address as it appeared on your 2009 tax return.

Using the Electronic Filing PIN
After you get your Electronic Filing PIN, enter it in the ‘Electronic Filing PIN’ entry field when filing your return. Keep a copy of your signed tax return for your records.
